New Hope for Kasakula girl child

As ActionAid donates MK25m hostel

On October, 23rd, 2020 ActionAid Malawi (AAM) led by its Vice Board Chairperson, Professor Dorothy Nampota, handed over a K25 million girls’ hostel at Kasakula Day Secondary in Ntchisi District. The hostel is expected to accommodate 56 girls at school, especially those in form four.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the school,  Professor Nampota, who was accompanied by AAM Board of Directors and General Assembly members, Executive Director, Assan Golowa, and staff said the donation is in line with ActionAid Malawi’s current strategy paper titled: Action for Social Justice, which mandates the organisation to promote the rights of vulnerable groups, including the girl child.

She urged girls at the school to make good use of the hostel by focusing more on education to become productive citizens in future,

Receiving the donation on behalf of government, Central East Education Division Manager, Billy Banda, who was the guest of honor at the event, hailed ActionAid for its remarkable developments since it started operating in the district in 2007.

Banda promised that government would look into remaining issues at the hostel to ensure that the infrastructure provides the conducive learning environment for girls.. Other key officials who made speeches at the event include parliamentarian for area, Benard Chikwete, Senior Chief Kasakula and Ntchisi District Council officials.

The event was also marked by performances such as songs, poetry, and traditional dances.

Apart from the handover ceremony of hostel, AAM Board of Directors and general assembly members also toured other projects and interventions done by the organisation in the district. The projects toured include, Katete Community Day Secondary School, Early Childhood Development at Galumtsuke Model Community Based Child Care Centre, and a Safe Space at Chimbike Village.

A similar tour of ActionAid interventions was done by another group of Board of Directors and General Assembly members in Mchinji District.
