Digital Media Intern

Background

ActionAid Malawi (AAM) is a non-governmental organization and a member of the ActionAid International Federation, working to advance social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication. Guided by a human rights-based and feminist approach, AAM works in partnership with communities, civil society, social movements, and government to challenge structural causes of poverty and injustice.

 

As part of its communication and visibility efforts under the Country Strategy Paper (CSP VI) Transforming Systems for Social Justice 2024–2028) AAM seeks to strengthen its digital presence and engagement with the public. To support this goal, AAM intends to engage a Digital and Social Media Intern to assist the Communications Unit in managing online platforms, producing engaging digital content, and amplifying AAM’s visibility and advocacy work.

2. Purpose of the Internship

The Digital and Social Media Intern will support the Communications Unit in implementing ActionAid Malawi’s digital communication strategy. The intern will contribute to the organization’s visibility by managing social media platforms, developing digital content, supporting campaigns, and documenting project activities through photography, videography, and storytelling.

3. Key Responsibilities

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Fundraising and Communications Officer and will be responsible for:

a) Content Creation and Management

Support the planning, creation, and posting of content (text, images, videos, graphics) on ActionAid Malawi’s social media platforms (Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn.)

Draft engaging captions and hashtags in line with AAM’s communication guidelines and campaigns.

Assist in developing digital storytelling materials highlighting AAM’s impact, success stories, and campaigns.

Maintain a social media content calendar and monitor online engagement.

b) Digital Engagement and Analytics

  • Monitor and analyze the performance of social media content using analytics tools.
  • Prepare monthly reports on social media reach, engagement, and audience insights.
  • Recommend ways to improve online engagement and visibility.

c) Media and Communication Support

  • Assist in covering organizational events and activities (photography, short videos, live updates).
  • Support media documentation, including editing photos and short video clips.
  • Contribute to the design of digital communication materials such as infographics, posters, and newsletters.
  • Support the compilation of media and digital communication archives.

 

d) Campaign and Visibility Support

  • Support implementation of digital advocacy and communication campaigns.
  • Assist in maintaining consistency of ActionAid Malawi’s brand identity across platforms.

4. Expected Deliverables

  • Weekly and monthly social media posts developed and shared in line with the content calendar.
  • Monthly social media analytics report.
  • Digital content (videos, graphics, stories) highlighting key AAM projects and campaigns.
  • High-quality photographs and videos from events and field activities.
  • Documentation of at least one success or impact story per month.

 

5. Duration and Location

The internship will run for six (6) months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs.

The intern will be based at the ActionAid Malawi Country Office in Lilongwe, with occasional travel to project sites when necessary.

 

6. Reporting and Supervision

The intern will report directly to the Fundraising and  Communications Officer, and will work closely with other units.

7. Qualifications and Competencies

  • A recent graduate (or final year student) in Mass Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Marketing, Graphic Design, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in using social media platforms professionally.
  • Skills in photography, videography, and basic video/photo editing (e.g., Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, or CapCut).
  • Good writing and storytelling skills.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing, analytics tools, and content scheduling is an added advantage.
  • Creative, proactive, and passionate about social justice, gender equality, and youth engagement.

 

8. Learning and Development Opportunities

During the internship, the intern will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in managing digital communication for a development organization.
  • Learn about ActionAid Malawi’s programming, advocacy, and communication work.
  • Build a portfolio of digital content and campaigns.
  • Receive mentorship from communication and advocacy professionals.

 

9. Remuneration

The internship is non-salaried but will include a monthly stipend to cover transport and communication costs, in line with Malawi Government’s internship policy.
